I met my wife at a Star Trek convention. She was study abroad from France and spoke little English, and I didn’t know a lick of French. So, for the first few months of our relationship, we communicated by speaking Klingon.

Did someone add extra-canonical vocabulary to klingon? Because like I don’t think they really ever flesh it out on screen, unless you just want to insult people a lot anyway

They totally did, I remember the old Klingon dictionary and there was definitely enough there to give you a grasp of a conversational language, like a lot of stuff that was not immediately canon, but I guess they added to make Klingon for Star Trek VI. So yeah, since about 1992 or so you could speak Klingon with relative control over what you were saying.
